Freshfields really is a warm and friendly place.

Before applying, I was aware of the Freshfields brand but on a personal level, upon joining, it came across less as a towering institution and more an aggregation of highly motivated and personable individuals. There’s a recognition that everyone is different but that’s no obstacle to collaborating and enjoying the work that we do together. People take their work seriously, but not themselves.

One high-pressure deal in Finland particularly sticks in my mind.

Being parachuted in as a standby on Monday only to realise that if we didn’t close the deal by that Friday, the government would be obliged to pay for that portion out of its own pockets – ie using taxpayer money – which would have had huge political consequences for the government. The negotiation was very difficult, involving multiple parties with diverging interests, and we were there for four long days but we succeeded.

I've been seconded to Hong Kong and Washington, DC.

You typically get to live in the middle of the city (close to the office premises), taking in the life that the place has to offer and meeting colleagues from around our global network. It helps you grow as a lawyer and a person, and gives you a lot more confidence in the way you work.

The training here really helps you become a rounded, holistic lawyer.

We have a lot of resources and can provide structured training. There is likely a training session available on our intranet on any pertinent legal topic you can think of – and if there isn’t – you can take charge of filling that gap!

The Freshfields cricket team was an important part of my decision to join.

I actually started playing cricket for the team here a year and a half before I even joined and have since toured with the team to Dublin, Amsterdam, Jersey, Valencia and more. There are lots and lots of options to get involved in non-work activities.

What does Freshfields expect of trainees?

Commitment. That doesn’t just mean knowing the law; it’s also finessing the trusted adviser role, providing information in a way that is most useful to your client, which requires you to understand their business and their working styles.

What can trainees expect of Freshfields?

A supportive environment with lots of exciting opportunities.

Freshfields in two words?

Understated overachievers.
