At Freshfields, you truly get the support and training to help you be the best lawyer you can possibly be.Nii Sekan Trainee
As a global leader, Freshfields needs a diverse workforce.
There is no ‘Freshfields archetype’ – everyone is talented, we all work incredibly hard, and everybody brings something different and valuable to the table. If you think you have what it takes, give it a shot and you stand a good chance of joining us.
What’s the most exciting thing I’ve worked on? Nearly everything!
In my first seat I was involved in a high-profile mandate that ended up before the UK Competition and Markets Authority and spent weeks preparing for and attending hearings. Big household names were involved in a matter with national significance: very few lawyers get to be involved in something of that calibre, let alone trainees in the early stages of their career.
It sounds cliché but Freshfields’ training is unique and stands out.
The eight-seat training contract lends itself to exploring a broad range of work. Three months is just the right amount of time: you have long enough to learn but there’s always something new to look forward to. The extra knowledge you gain from exploring multiple practice areas certainly makes you a more rounded lawyer.
Senior people are accessible at Freshfields.
They will know you by name and keep up with what’s going on in your life. I have had in-depth one-on-ones with people I would have previously thought of as totally inaccessible. Those opportunities help you grow and develop early on. Trainees are also invited to events like signing lunches and dinners along with senior client contacts. It’s great to celebrate after a challenging matter with partners and clients who are not solely focused on work.
You don’t realise how fast-paced London is until you live here.
I would recommend moving to London to anyone launching their career. It’s an exciting city to live and work in and there’s so much to do. I’m still discovering amazing things around Bishopsgate.
I am currently involved with the Stephen Lawrence Scheme, which I had heard about prior to joining the firm, a mentor on Freshfields START Mentoring Scheme in partnership with Aspiring Solicitors
and a trainee ambassador for Freshfields vacation schemes, which are all really enriching. Speaking to candidates from different backgrounds helps you find perspective and I enjoy shedding light on life at Freshfields. These types of initiatives are really important: we are shaping people’s lives and ambitions.
Don’t try and guess if you are good enough for Freshfields.
If you’re willing to put in the work and you have ambition, you are as capable as anyone else. You’ll never find out if you don’t try.
Take care of yourself.
The importance of wellbeing and mental health is recognised at Freshfields, all the way up to partner level. You need to take your work seriously but take work-life balance equally seriously. Have fun and pace yourself: this is the beginning of an entire career, and is a marathon, not a sprint.
